The Quran says in
Surah Ash-Sharh (94:5–6):
فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ٥
إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ٦
“Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” (94:5)
“Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” (94:6)
Many people understand these verses to mean that ease comes after hardship. However, another possible meaning is that ease exists with hardship, even when we cannot immediately recognize it.
This raises an important question:
If a person is experiencing severe anxiety, stress, illness, or suffering, where is the ease?
Many people die while facing hardships. Some are never given the opportunity to improve their situation or fulfill their dreams. So where is the ease promised in these verses?
One possible answer is that the complete meaning of this ease may become clear in the afterlife.
Consider a person who is blind, physically disabled, mentally impaired, and extremely poor. Such a person may be unable to perform many acts of worship in the usual way. They may be unable to earn a living, help others, or even care for themselves. Instead, they depend on the help of others. They still feel pain, hunger, loneliness, and hardship.
Where is the ease in such a life?
A possible reflection is that Allah's ease for this person may appear in the Hereafter. Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. A person who lacked ability and opportunity in this life will not be judged as though they possessed the same abilities as everyone else. Allah's justice takes every limitation into account.
Furthermore, those who cared for and helped such a person may receive reward from Allah for their kindness and compassion. In this way, ease can exist for both the one who suffers and the one who serves.
Now consider an ordinary, healthy person.
When illness strikes, Allah provides concessions. A sick person may postpone fasting. If prayer becomes difficult, Islamic law provides accommodations according to one's condition. Zakat is only obligatory upon those who meet the required conditions. Many religious obligations are linked to a person's ability and circumstances.
Whenever hardship appears, Allah opens doors of ease appropriate to that hardship. Seeking a better life through prayer and effort is also encouraged. Allah loves that His servants ask Him for goodness, while striving to improve their circumstances through lawful means.
Perhaps one of the deeper lessons of these verses is that ease is not always the removal of hardship. Sometimes ease is mercy, reduced responsibility, spiritual reward, divine justice, support from others, or a compensation that becomes fully visible only in the Hereafter.
The secret of “with hardship comes ease” may be that Allah's ease is larger than what we can see in the present moment.
