Surah An-Nas contains the words " Waswasa" and "Khannas," and today we will look at the impact Satan has on the human inner self so that we may protect ourselves from the attacks of Satan. For this, first we read this incident from Tafsir Ibn Kathir.
It is mentioned in Musnad Ahmad that The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was once riding his donkey, with a companion seated behind him. The donkey stumbled, and the companion spontaneously exclaimed, “May Satan be ruined!”. Upon hearing this, The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not say that, for it causes Satan to swell [with pride] until he becomes as large as a house and he says, ‘I have thrown him down by my power.’ Rather, say ‘Bismillah’ (In the name of Allah); when you say that, he shrinks until he becomes as small as a fly.”
From this, it is proven that through the remembrance of Allah, Satan is humiliated and defeated.
Let’s understand its impact that visibly appears upon us, with an example from the Wednesday series
In Wednesday, “Hyde” is shown as a rare and dangerous outcast creature. Its concept is inspired by both psychological horror and old literature.
Hyde’s Background
The name “Hyde” comes from the old novel. (Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde )
In that story, one person has two personalities within himself:
- one normal
- one dark violent side (“Mr Hyde”).
In the Wednesday series, Hyde’s transformation can be triggered by emotions, trauma, or control.
Hyde usually follows the commands of its “master.” That is why manipulation and mind control are important themes in the series.
Hyde becoming a large swollen monster is a fictional transformation concept. According to the lore of the series:
- Hyde is a hidden violent form inside a human.
- When it transforms, the body mutates:
- muscles and limbs stretch
- bones change shape
- the size appears larger
- the face becomes monster-like.
Now let us look at its connection
The moment Satan triggers the Heart through
"waswasa"
(whispers evil thoughts.)
Then he becomes angry, commits evil deeds, abuses others — the Hyde inside him swells and grows larger.
But if the person does not allow those triggers to overpower him with the help of Allah's name, then it shrinks, as we read in the Tafsir.
Which means "khannas"
(The one who slinks away or retreats the moment you remember Allah.)
We do not physically change our body shape like Hyde, but we do experience a certain internal change, such as anger, loneliness, stress, etc.
Why all of this happens ?
Just as the host in Wednesday is often unaware that the 'Hyde' is a separate entity, we frequently mistake Waswasa for our own thoughts. Saying Bismillah creates instant self-awareness, shrinking the 'intruder' and helping us distinguish our true self from the deceptive, swollen influence of the Khannas.
