Why Is Belief in God Fading?

It seems that belief in God is slowly disappearing from the lives of many people. Why is this happening?

In this article, we will explore some of the reasons behind this trend and how modern distractions, personal pain, and the pursuit of instant gratification can distance a person from faith.

The First Question: 

Why Does a Human Being Need God?

I am not talking about someone who is already a Muslim and follows Islam.

I am talking about a nonbeliever.

Why does a person need God in their life?

The first question they should ask themselves is:

Can they truly control their environment?

A person can work for improvement and make plans, but beyond a certain point, they cannot control everything.

Even if someone denies this question, they must face another:

Can they completely control their own thoughts?

Can they stop death?

Can they guarantee justice for every victim of oppression?

If someone is wronged and dies without receiving justice, where will that justice come from if there is no afterlife and no God who establishes ultimate justice?

These are questions that human beings cannot easily escape.

Then Why Are So Many People Atheists?

There are many reasons.

Some people want a world where everything makes immediate sense.

Some struggle with sacrificing their desires.

Some have experienced religious trauma.

Others have witnessed hypocrisy and false representations of religion and become confused.

Pain can push people toward denial.

When someone suffers deeply and sees no justice, they may begin to believe that God is not there.

The Dopamine Trap

Modern science tells us that dopamine is involved in motivation, reward, and the pursuit of pleasurable experiences.

When a person repeatedly seeks instant gratification, their attention becomes focused on whatever provides immediate pleasure.

Over time, desires can begin to dominate their life.

The pursuit of pleasure becomes the center of their existence.

So the dopamine trap is not merely a scientific phenomenon. It is also a spiritual challenge.

The Quran warns about this reality:

اَفَرَءَيۡتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ اِلٰهَهٗ هٰوٮهُ 

"Have you seen the one who has taken his own desire as his god?"

The Quran identifies a danger that modern psychology also recognizes: when desires become the highest authority in a person's life.

 Science And Atheism

Many people hear that life developed through evolutionary processes and conclude that God is unnecessary.

As a result, they begin questioning faith and religious belief.

These are some of the questions and arguments that many nonbelievers carry with them.

Why Does Allah Allow All of This?

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes that human beings are responsible for their choices.

A Human Being Receives What He Strives For

Reference: Surah An-Najm (53:39)

وَاَنۡ لَّيۡسَ لِلۡاِنۡسَانِ اِلَّا مَا سَعٰىۙ‏ 

"And that there is not for man except that for which he strives."

Allah has given human beings free will.

A person may choose truth or falsehood, faith or denial.

The Journey Toward Allah Is Not Without Trials

Those who sincerely seek Allah often face tests, hardships, and moments of pain.

But for someone who is already suffering, believing in God can become difficult.

Many people step back because they do not want more pain.

They want a life of comfort and immediate rewards.

This is where the attraction of worldly pleasure becomes powerful.

Is Allah Cruel?

The answer is no.

Allah's system is interconnected.

Sometimes the suffering we experience comes through the actions of other human beings who misuse their free will.

The victim may feel that the suffering came directly from God, while in reality another person chose injustice.

Yet Allah continuously gives people opportunities to return to Him.

The Quran reminds us:

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يَظۡلِمُ النَّاسَ شَيْئًا وَّلٰـكِنَّ النَّاسَ اَنۡفُسَهُمۡ يَظۡلِمُوۡنَ‏ 

"Indeed, Allah does not wrong the people at all, but it is the people who wrong themselves."

A System Built on Mercy and Free Will

Allah allows human beings to choose freely.

He does not force love or faith upon them.

He wants people to come to Him willingly.

Confusion exists.

Doubts exist.

Pain exists.

But Allah responds to people in unique ways throughout their lives.

Sometimes He answers through hardship.

Sometimes through guidance.

Sometimes through questions that force a person to search for deeper meaning.

The Greatest Title Given by Allah

Allah gave many titles to Muhammad ﷺ, but among them, the greatest title Allah Himself chose was:

Surah Al-Anbiya (21:107)

وَمَاۤ اَرۡسَلۡنٰكَ اِلَّا رَحۡمَةً لِّـلۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ‏

 “And We have not sent you except as a mercy to all the worlds.”

This title is not limited to one nation, one type of people, or one era.

Allah called him ﷺ a mercy for all the worlds.

What Is Mercy?

To understand this title, we first need to understand what mercy truly means.

Mercy means:

When someone is weak, you become their strength.

When someone has no voice, you become their voice.

And when someone makes a mistake, you still give them the chance to explain themselves with fairness and compassion.

Mercy is not weakness.

True mercy is balance — balance between justice and kindness

A Secret Reflection on,

The Dress Code of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Even the dome of the Roza-e-Rasool ﷺ is green.

Allah introduces Himself in the Quran as Light (Noor).

And when white light is split, a spectrum of seven colors appears.

Green appears in the center of the visible spectrum — between warmer and cooler tones.

It creates a sense of balance and harmony.

Green is the color of nature, bringing balance to the world — and it is the color Allah chose for him ﷺ.

This becomes a deep reflection of the title:

 رحمۃٌ للعالمین — Mercy to all the worlds

No matter how people behaved — angry or calm, harsh or gentle — The Prophet ﷺ remained balanced in mercy, wisdom, patience, and justice.

So here is the answer to the question: What is mercy?

Mercy means perfect balance.

Mercy in Weakness and Mercy in Power

The life of the Prophet ﷺ itself explains this title.

During the incident of Journey to Taif, when he was hurt and rejected, he still chose mercy for the people.

And during the Conquest of Mecca, when he had complete victory and power, he again chose mercy instead of revenge.

This is what made him ﷺ truly:

Mercy to all the worlds

Because many people show kindness when weak, and many show power when strong.

But the Prophet ﷺ showed mercy in both conditions.

Understanding It Through Science

In science, balance is what keeps systems alive.

The human body survives through balance.

Nature survives through balance.

Even light contains balance within its colors.

And in the same way, the Prophet ﷺ brought balance to humanity:

balance between justice and forgiveness,

strength and gentleness,

authority and compassion.

The Beauty of This Title

This Title itself shows Allah’s love for His Prophet ﷺ.

Allah did not describe him mainly through wealth, power, or status.

Instead, Allah introduced him to the worlds through mercy.

And the life of Muhammad ﷺ became the perfect example of love, mercy, wisdom, and obedience to Allah.

Science says that we are always seeing the past, because light takes time to reach us, right?

Then if we look from the perspective of the Quran, we ourselves may currently be in what could be understood as a “past state.”

Of course, the event of Miraj already points toward something beyond normal human perception, but since science does not accept it in the same way, why not search for the answer through science itself and then compare it with the Quran as well?

For this, we may need to move from physics toward biology.

The Fly's Perception of Time

Flies process visual information much faster than humans.
Their brains detect movement quickly, making fast actions appear slower to them.
This is why a fly can easily avoid a human swat.
Scientists use the critical flicker fusion rate to measure this ability.
Humans process about 60 visual flashes per second.
Flies process around 200–300 flashes per second.
This gives flies a more “detailed” perception of fast motion.

For the fly, its life is completely normal, just like ours is normal for us. But the way our hand appears to move slowly to the fly, in the same way we see the Sun moving in a kind of slow motion. But in the vast reality of space, the Earth is hurtling around the Sun at over 67,000 miles per hour, and the Sun itself is traveling through the galaxy at roughly 448,000 miles per hour.

From a fly’s perspective, one human year may feel like 4–6 years because flies process time and movement much faster than humans.

Something similar is also reflected in the Quran.

Quranic Verses on Time Dilation

— Surah Al-Hajj (22:47)

﴿ وَإِنَّ يَوْمًا عِندَ رَبِّكَ كَأَلْفِ سَنَةٍ مِّمَّا تَعُدُّونَ ﴾

“And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of what you count.”

— Surah Al-Ma'arij (70:4)

﴿ تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ ﴾

“The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a Day whose measure is fifty thousand years.”

— Surah As-Sajdah (32:5)

﴿ يُدَبِّرُ الْأَمْرَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ يَعْرُجُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ مِّمَّا تَعُدُّونَ ﴾

“Allah governs every matter from the heaven to the earth, then it ascends to Him in a Day whose measure is a thousand years of what you count.”

The Reality of Time After Death

These verses reflect the same kind of reality: when we die and enter other realms, we may realize what the true nature of time actually is.

How?

The Quran says that on the Day of Judgment, people will be asked how long they remained in the world:

— Surah Al-Mu’minun (23:113)

﴿ قَالُوا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ ﴾

“They will say: We remained a day or part of a day.”

The Transformation of Sight

Now think of it this way: if that fly were suddenly given human eyes, then those same 4–6 years would appear to it as only one year.

And the fly would say the same thing.

Why?

Because what seemed slow to it was actually happening very quickly in reality.

About this too, the Quran says that on that Day human sight will become sharp:

— Surah Qaf (50:22)

﴿ فَبَصَرُكَ الْيَوْمَ حَدِيدٌ ﴾

“Today your sight has become sharp.”

The same thing that would happen to the fly if its eyes were changed.

Dimensions of Time and The Event of Miraj

So what if we are currently within time in a kind of “past state”?

And perhaps the event of Miraj was different because Allah opened all dimensions of time for Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . 

something an ordinary human being may only experience after death.

As long as we are in this world, we can still correct our future by correcting our actions, because Allah does not wrong anyone.

Important Note:

These verses teach us that time flows differently in different realms. Allah also introduced Himself to us through "Light", so it is possible that the speed of light may differ across different realms as well. We also do not know whether the “day” mentioned refers to the measure of light traveling in our realm, a normal day and night cycle, or something entirely beyond human understanding. 

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"A place in Paradise as small as a bow is better than all that the sun rises and sets upon. A journey in the cause of Allah in the morning or evening is better than the world and whatever is in it."

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 2793

This Hadith also supports the idea that realities beyond our world may operate differently, just as the Quran points toward differences in time and realms. Many possibilities may exist, but their true reality is known only to Allah.

Allah knows best.

The Quran repeatedly calls people toward “Ibrah” (lessons and reflection).
The word “عبرة” itself appears multiple times in the Quran, and many other verses deliver the same message through different words:

• Learn from what happened before you.
• Do not become like those people.
• There are signs for those who reflect.
• Travel through the earth and observe what happened to earlier nations.

Why is this message repeated so much?

First Reason

Because Allah’s judgment is real.

The Day of Judgment will happen, and every human being will be held accountable for their actions. The Quran reminds people that history is not meaningless; the rise and fall of nations are warnings for humanity.

Second Reason

If a person understands a sign according to the problems of his own time and society, then he should use that understanding to protect others as well.

This may sound difficult, so we can understand it through science.

Interesting Fact About Crows:

 “Danger Memory Zones”

Crows are highly intelligent birds that remember danger linked to death. When they find a dead crow, they often avoid that area because it signals possible threats like predators or poisoning. This behavior is survival learning.

Studies suggest they may avoid such locations for weeks or even months depending on the danger level. They may also avoid a surrounding radius instead of only one exact spot.

This helps them survive by remembering dangerous places and learning from warning signs.

What Can Humans Learn From This?

In daily life, humans also witness many events that become signs and warnings.

Sometimes a person commits ظلم, cheating, theft, or corruption and quickly faces consequences. Such events can become reminders and lessons for society.

Similarly, the Quran mentions many destroyed nations. In several places, Allah does not always focus on names, but on the lesson behind what happened to them.

This teaches that warnings should sometimes be shared without exposing people’s identities unnecessarily, so that:

• gossip is avoided,
• dignity is protected,
• but the lesson still reaches others.

In the same way, The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned people not to casually enter places where Allah’s punishment descended upon earlier nations.

لَا تَدْخُلُوا عَلَى هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمِ الْمُعَذَّبِينَ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونُوا بَاكِينَ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُونُوا بَاكِينَ فَلَا تَدْخُلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ، أَنْ يُصِيبَكُمْ مَا أَصَابَهُمْ

“Do not enter upon these people who are being punished unless you are weeping. If you are not weeping, then do not enter upon them, lest what befell them should befall you.”

 Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 433, Sahih Muslim 2980a

If you reflect deeply on the Hadith, it says to enter the place while weeping. The wisdom behind this is that when people see you crying, they ask the reason — not assume that you are going there as if for a picnic. This reflects the same kind of behavior observed in Crows.

Important Balance

However, it is important not to assume that every hardship faced by someone is definitely Allah’s punishment. Sometimes difficulties are:

• tests,
• consequences of human actions,
• or trials through which Allah raises a person’s status.

What Is Sabr ?

Many people have explained Sabr in different ways, and one common question is:

“Is Sabr passive waiting or active striving?”

We can understand this through science and real-life examples.

Example No. 1 

Pigeons and Aurora Lights

Homing pigeons partly rely on Earth’s magnetic field to navigate.

During auroras, charged solar particles create geomagnetic storms that disturb this magnetic field, confusing the pigeons’ internal compass. Research shows that during strong geomagnetic activity, pigeons may become disoriented, take longer routes, and return home more slowly.

However, their navigation system is not completely disabled because they can still rely on landmarks and memory to eventually find their way home.

What do we learn from this example?

The pigeons do not completely lose their navigation system, and they still return home — just more slowly.

Similarly, when difficulties come into our lives, do we completely lose all our abilities?

Of course not.

Sometimes slowing down is simply part of the process.

This is why the Quran says:

 Surah Al-Baqarah (2:45)

Arabic:

 وَاسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ

 “Seek help through patience and prayer.”

In this case, Sabr appears as active striving because the pigeons do not stop flying, nor do they sit and wait for the magnetic field to become normal again.

Example No. 2 

 The Rope During a Flood

You may have often seen situations during floods where a person is being carried away by powerful water currents.

At that moment, there may be almost nothing they can do to save themselves until someone throws them a rope.

But even after the rope is thrown, survival still depends on the person using all their remaining strength to hold onto it tightly.

The Quran says:

 Surah Aal-e-Imran (3:103)

Arabic:

 وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.”

In this example, Sabr appears as both active striving and passive waiting:

the struggle to catch and hold the rope is active effort,

while trust in rescue and waiting for safety reflects reliance upon Allah.

Example No. 3 

 Car Crash in the Mountains

A person goes on a trip to the mountains. While returning at night, his car falls into a deep ravine, and he gets injured. There is no one around to hear or see him. In such a situation, what would happen?

At that point, what can a person do besides pray, hope, and wait?

Here, Sabr appears in the form of passive waiting.

Allah says:

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153)

Arabic:

 إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ

 “Indeed, Allah is with the patient.”

In such situations, Sabr becomes complete trust in Allah while enduring what is beyond human control.

Final Reflection 

From these examples, Sabr is not just passive waiting, nor is it only action.

Sometimes Sabr means continuing to move forward despite confusion.

Sometimes it means holding tightly during hardship.

And sometimes it means peacefully enduring what cannot be controlled while placing complete trust in Allah.

Sabr is not the absence of struggle.

Sabr is how you carry yourself through the struggle.

Sabr is complete trust in Allah.
